The Hennery's first flock

Our Story

We never thought about being poulters, until our friend decided to move across the country from California to here and she brought her 5 hens with her.  She was staying with us until she could find a farm to purchase. We agreed that she could have her hens here, but we had concerns that our dogs and cats would not take a liking to having the chickens around. However, that was not the case, everyone got along just fine.

We enjoyed watching her hens so much, how they foraged, and how they interacted with each other, plus the bonus of having fresh eggs! (Store bought eggs have nothing in comparison to the taste of fresh chicken eggs from pasture raised hens.) We decided that we needed our own flock, since she would be moving to her new farm and taking her ladies with her.

We researched the different types of breeds, reached out to friends who kept chickens to find fertile eggs, purchased our first incubator and successfully hatched  their eggs. We also purchased some chicks, making our first flock a total of 28 hens and roosters.  In 2021, we added our first ducklings to the farm.

In running our farm, and in general, we are all about repurposing, recycling and reusing, and not letting anything go to waste. We try to come up with renewable uses and eco-friendly ways of protecting the land and our environment, as best we can. This can be seen in some of the things we do or have on the farm, which we share on our posts and write about in our blogs.
